Is it OK to Bake or Cook with Cannabis in a Microwave?
Absolutely. Contrary to popular belief, microwaves don’t heat up like conventional ovens.
This is great news for the delicate cannabinoids in cannabis.
I spent hours researching the science of microwave ovens in relation to how they heat and cook and how they affect the nutrients of foods.
I learned that microwave cooking does not reduce the nutritional value of foods any more than conventional cooking.
In fact, foods cooked in a microwave oven may retain more of their vitamins and minerals because microwave ovens can cook more quickly and without adding water.
Microwaves excite the molecules in your food, causing them to rub against each other. Much like rubbing your hands together, this friction causes heat.
The microwaves mainly target water, fat, and sugar molecules.
The time your cake would spend in a conventional oven would be much longer and, in turn, expose your cannabinoids to heat longer.
There’s no absolute highest temperature a microwave can reach, as microwaves don’t have heating elements like regular ovens.
The heat is produced by the microwaved food item and not the appliance. But since most foods have some amount of water, the maximum temperature they’ll reach is around 212°F (100°C).
Can I Decarboxylate Cannabis in the Microwave?
After learning how microwaves heat molecules, it may sound like a good idea, but the answer is NO!
Microwaves prefer water, fat, and sugar molecules. Plants and herbs don’t pair well with microwaves.
The maximum temperature food can get to and still be edible is near 212°F (or 100°C), the boiling point of water.
Most foods have plenty of water molecules. When the water turns to steam and escapes, foods begin to burn.
You may end up with a burned and crispy pile of once-valuable cannabis quite quickly.
Another key fact about microwaves is that they often cook unevenly. You’ve probably noticed the hot and cold spots as you reheat leftovers.
This is certainly not ideal for decarbing!
Can I Bake Cannabis Mug Cakes in the Oven?
Are You Still skeptical, or don’t own a microwave? No fear! We’ve got you covered.
Choose an ovenproof mug, a small ovenproof baking dish that holds at least 12 ounces, or a muffin tin lined with a baking cup.
Bake in a conventional oven at 350°.
We estimate about 15-20 minutes of baking time if it’s in a mug.
I haven’t needed to test the oven times, so please set your timer and check often. Insert a toothpick, and if it comes out fairly clean, you’re good to go.
The temperature of the baking dish will keep cooking your cake even after it’s removed from the oven. So, don’t overbake.
The High-Point: Final Thoughts
I really enjoyed all the research I endured for these recipes. We ate a lot of mug cakes too!
My son Alex is gluten-free and I always enjoy finding a recipe he can eat. (You’ll see him in the video with me.)

To be honest, there’s nothing better than a moist sheet cake. These are great quick runner-ups, but don’t expect them to be quite the same.

Tips on Baking Your Weed Infused Mug Cakes
- Make sure you melt your cannabis-infused oil, if it’s a solid such as coconut oil, before mixing it in.
- Replace the amount of oil required with a prepared tincture from a dispensary. Try other cannabinoids too.
- Warm a neutral-tasting carrier oil slightly and dissolve a cannabis concentrate into it. RSO, FECO, kief, or a small amount of dried trim are some examples to stir in.
- Make sure your herb is decarboxylated first.
- Replace the desired amount of sugar in the recipe with cannasugar.
- If you use extra virgin unrefined coconut oil, you will taste a bit of coconut. Make the most of this by adding coconut flakes for a coconut cake!
- All recipes have been tested with gluten-free 1 to 1 baking flour and almond milk. They are also egg-free; you can use any nut milk you choose!
